Handshake

Two days ago, Mr. Olmert declared that he wanted to meet Mr. Seniora face to face, shake his hand and talk about peace.

Olmert’s handshake is a useless folklore…Remember the White House handshake between Arafat, Rabin and Peres? Did it lead to peace? Where did it lead?

A handshake or a peace treaty at this point in time is fruitless…It will be another fake peace… Maybe the Israeli government should learn from the consequences and results of the peace treaties with Egypt and Jordan.

Peace is not political
Peace is not disengagement
Peace is not isolation
Peace is not neutrality

Peace is relationships
Peace is connection
Peace is engagement
Peace is people

Only people’s peace is a real peace.

Excellent post, Laury. It has always been my belief that peace is a way of life. You are either peaceful, and able to live "in peace" with your surroundings, or you are in a state of conflict. We need more people who truly believe in peace to send that message to our governments so that war can become as extinct as the dinosaurs.

Good morning , Laury.

Your last post is very important ( I like them all , but here you touch very important points ).

For that reason , let me quote you and give my answers :

>Two days ago, Mr. Olmert declared that he wanted to meet Mr. Seniora face to face, shake his hand and talk about peace. Olmert’s handshake is a useless folklore…Remember the White House handshake between Arafat, Rabin and Peres? Did it lead to peace? Where did it lead?

-We must separate 2 points :
1. I sadly agree that our PM is a clown and his management of the last war was a complete failure. There is a wide demand for his resignation , and also the minister of defense and the chief of staff will have to leave their offices.
2. I didn’t like Oslo agreements too. But unlike 17 may 1983 agreement , nobody cancelled it and it is still in force .From autumn 1993 till the autumn 2000 there was a feeling of change. But we must remember , that Oslo agreements led to a full peace with Jordan.

>A handshake or a peace treaty at this point in time is fruitless…It will be another fake peace… Maybe the Israeli government should learn from the consequences and results of the peace treaties with Egypt and Jordan.

- We must emphasize “at this point” .As for peace with Egypt and Jordan – there is an argument about normalization , but there is a strong peace. Practically there is ceasefire with Egypt from 1975 and with Jordan – from 1970. What does seem possible – to sign an armistice with Lebanon and manage peace talks secretly , not buy laughing on Mr. Siniora . Anywhere , I don’t consider the peace with Egypt and Jordan as fake , but “cold” ( warmer with Jordan ). I think , that when Israel will have peace with Syria , it will be “cooler” than with Egypt , but the peace with Lebanon will be the best. We have so much in common and may contribute a lot one to another !

> Peace is not political
- OK

> Peace is not disengagement
- My dear , most of Israelis today realize , that the disengagement was a failure .

>Peace is not isolation.
- OK, but if you mean Gaza , they have a common border with Egypt.

>Peace is not neutrality.
-What about Switzerland ?

>Peace is relationships
>Peace is connection
>Peace is engagement
>Peace is people
-OK

>Only people’s peace is a real peace.
-In practice , there are many Jews that have Arab friends. When I worked in hotel couple of years ago , we were a good team with Arab workers.

Wishing you all the best ,
Emil

Hi Emil,

Thanks for ur accurate reply...

When Israel and Egypt signed a peace treaty it came at the exact timing politically (based on interests) but where the people of both country ready? No,

Peace with Jordan was peace with King Hussein, again politically correct but again on popular level it is a failure...

U know we say security is a feeling...Peace is a feeling too...u can not impose it on people...they have to feel it...

My point is that I dont want us Lebanese and Israelis to have such kind of cold, warm whatever peace... It should be a real one on popular level
